My friend Penny asked me to make her a ring, so we decided to go sea glass hunting to find a gem for her. We visited one of my favourite haunts, Johnshaven. It was a lovely, bright September day. Penny had never been sea glass hunting before, but was up for the challenge. Two minutes after stepping onto the shingle, she stooped. "Is this round thing any use?" Penny asked, brushing off the sand and holding it up to the light. Talk about lucky! It was a codd marble. In 1872 Hiram Codd introduced a bottle design with a glass marble to keep the fizz in soft drinks. The Codd Neck Bottle had a marble and rubber washer in the neck. To pour the drink you pushed the marble in. Codd bottles were widely used until the 1930s. I've never found a marble, so I couldn't believe my eyes. We also found some lovely sea foam glass that Penny picked for her ring. The good friend that she is, Penny gifted me the marble and I've made it into a pendant.
Thanks Penny!
